Gemlik
The most widely planted olive in Türkiye — 48.7% of the country’s trees — and it got there on agronomy, not on oil. Easy rooting, cold hardiness, early bearing and low alternate bearing are why it spread; as an oil it is the mildest of the major Turkish varieties.
In the grove
Gemlik comes from the southern shore of the Marmara — Gemlik, Mudanya, Erdek and Trilye — where it makes up 75 to 80% of the groves. Since the 2000s it has been planted across the whole country, and the IOC now records it as Türkiye’s most widely cultivated variety. It is of medium vigour, roots easily from cuttings, adapts well to cold areas but is sensitive to drought, and prefers clay soils and irrigation.
It is overwhelmingly a black table olive — Turkish extension literature calls it the country’s best brine-curing variety — but oil content is above 22% and it is pressed at scale. In panel work its oils span the widest range of any Turkish cultivar tested, with the lowest pungency ever recorded in that study at 2.0. One variety producing both the delicate and the dilute.

Polyphenol figures are the ranges published for each variety, not measurements of any bottle in the library. A single oil's figure depends on when it was picked and how it was milled, and is shown on that oil's own page where the producer states one.
