Memecik
Türkiye’s leading oil cultivar and the most assertive of them on the palate — published Turkish panel work puts it at the top of both the bitterness and the pungency scale. It is also highly drought resistant, which matters more every year in the southern Aegean.
In the grove
Memecik is the variety of the southern Aegean — Aydın, Muğla, İzmir, Manisa and Denizli — and accounts for roughly 19% of Türkiye’s olive trees. The tree is strongly vigorous with a spreading, dense canopy, highly resistant to drought and moderately resistant to cold, partially self-fertile with Ayvalık, Gemlik and Erkence among its recommended pollinators. Oil content is high, above 22%. It shows periodicity, but yields stay satisfactory.
Fruit matures mid-November to mid-December. In a multi-region Turkish panel study, Memecik samples recorded the highest bitterness — 5.5 in Muğla, 4.8 in Aydın on a 10 cm scale — and the highest pungency at 6.1, of every cultivar and region tested. The EU-recognised Aydın Memecik PDO description says the same thing in words: intense fruity aroma, high bitterness and pungency.

Polyphenol figures are the ranges published for each variety, not measurements of any bottle in the library. A single oil's figure depends on when it was picked and how it was milled, and is shown on that oil's own page where the producer states one.
